Aix-en-provence is a French commune, former capital of Provence, sub-prefecture of Bouches-du-Rhône in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. Founded in 122 before JC under the name of Aquae Sextiae Romulus by the Roman garrison of Gaius Sextius Calvinus, Aix today has 140,684 inhabitants, making it the 23rd most populated municipality in France. It is part of the urban area of ​​Marseille-Aix-en-Provence which had 1,618,369 inhabitants in 2007, the third urban area in France. A spa town, Aix-en-Provence is particularly known for its cultural heritage: the University of Aix was created there in 1409, the town is notably associated with Émile Zola and Paul Cézanne, who was born there, and it holds an international lyric art festival every year.
