Avignon

Tourisme, City

Avignon is a city located at the confluence of the Rhône and the Durance. Nicknamed the "city of the popes" because of the presence of the popes from 1309 to 1423, it is currently the largest city and the prefecture of the department of Vaucluse.
It is one of the rare French cities to have preserved its ramparts and its historic center, composed of the papal palace, the episcopal complex, the Doms rock and the Avignon bridge. It has been classified as World Heritage by UNESCO under criteria I, II and IV.
The renown of its performing arts festival, a true artistic and cultural showcase for the city, has gone far beyond French borders. The city was the European capital of culture in 2000.
